What is written in ancient holybooks and shastras about women?

To ellaborate about their Dharma,karma,social behaviour and attire etc.When they r taught to become housewife and play this role only and men outside?Why they cant exchange their role that time?If all old norms and tradition are true and should be followed then why women are changing or changed themselves like men going for work,in dressing ,it means its wrong now?
